What arises when skill meets serendipity, or gravity grace?

Soft green and white fabric draped over books.

Beginnings

Once  itajime shibori held and taught me.  My pieces spoke sensuously to skin and eye. Silk and wool uniquely met these aesthetic aims due to their tactile hand, dynamic surfaces, and ability to express pattern and color.  Now, metal is my teacher.

Ethics and Community

Metal...a living abundance that travels too easily from our kitchens, restaurants and stores into the waste-stream with little thought of all that was offered to create it or all that it might yet yearn to be beyond serving as an instrument of our voracious consumption.

Beyond Metals' Instrumentality

I simply wondered....What small beauty  could be wrought with the still vital bodies of discarded metals?

Metal is both exacting and generous. It often leans in to guide the pliers, offering itself easily to clear attention. Just as easily  it will show the inattentive its sharp edge.

The circle has long been my figure of choice and the "can" opened out into reaching tendrils,  lanceolate leaves or tightly whorled centers carries that figure into  dynamic and light filled forms.

Crafting

I usually start with a feeling-tone I want to embody--soft or undulating or folded or linear. Then I cut and begin to work with the metal. I'll have 2-4 pieces developing at once. Depending on the complexity, each piece  takes 15-50 hours to complete.
